Effect of Solar Salt and Its Processed Salt on azoxymethane AOM and dextran sulfate sodium DSS

We investigated the effect of solar salt on azoxymethane (AOM, 10 mg/kg) and 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis-associated colonic cancer (CAC) in male C57BL/6J mice for 8 weeks. The CAC mice were orally administrated with water solution (at a concentration of 1027 mg/Kg/day) of purified salt (PS), solar salt from different salt field (SS-T, SS-H, SS-G, SS-S, SS-Y) and bamboo salt baked nine times (BS9x), respectively. Of all SS samples, SS-S and SS-Y showed anticancer effect; they suppressed shortening of colon, decreased in colon weight and weight-to-length ratio and also significantly reduced the mucosal ulcers neoplasia in colon tissue of CAC mice. In addition, they effectively up-regulated the mRNA levels of pro-apoptotic Bax, cell cycle-related p53 and p21, and reduced the Bcl-2 expression in the colon tissue than those found in PS- and the other SS-treated CAC mice. They also down-regulated the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory levels of iNOS and COX-2 as well. These results were agreed with that observed inimmunohistochemistry(IHC) assay. Such efficacies were found to have more improved when BS9x, heat-processed product of SS-Y, was administered. This study demonstrated that solar salt (especially SS-S and SS-Y) and BS9x which is made from SS-Y by heat processing showed anticancer activity to against AOM/DSS-induced colon carcinogenesis through reducing the inflammatory cytokines, and modulation of the CAC-related gene expression in mice.
